Local temperature in general relativity

چکیده

We examine the Tolman temperature by using Carter's variational formalism of thermodynamics. restrict our interests to fluids in thermal equilibrium that heat does not propagate. show this condition presents a general formula for local gradient. suggest resolution recently addressed conflict when chemical potential vanish.

On Quasi-local Hamiltonians in General Relativity

We analyse the definition of quasi-local energy in GR based on a Hamiltonian analysis of the Einstein-Hilbert action initiated by Brown-York. The role of the constraint equations, in particular the Hamiltonian constraint on the timelike boundary, neglected in previous studies, is emphasized here. We argue that a consistent definition of quasi-local energy in GR requires, at a minimum, a framewo...

Local Scale Invariance and General Relativity

According to the theory of unimodular relativity developed by Anderson and Finkelstein, the equations of general relativity with a cosmological constant are composed of two independent equations, one which determines the null-cone structure of space-time, another which determines the measure structure of space-time. The field equations that follow from the restricted variational principle of th...

Quasi-Local Energy-Momentum and Angular Momentum in General Relativity

The present status of the quasi-local mass, energy-momentum and angular-momentum constructions in general relativity is reviewed. First, the general ideas, concepts, and strategies, as well as the necessary tools to construct and analyze the quasi-local quantities, are recalled. Then, the various specific constructions and their properties (both successes and deficiencies are discussed. Finally...

Quasi-local definitions of energy in general relativity

Defining energy is a surprisingly difficult problem in general relativity. For instance, the energy density of the gravitational field of a planet at a particular point could be determined by a comoving observer measuring the kinetic energy of a freely falling object. Due to the equivalence principle both the object and the observer fall at equal rates. Therefore, the observer would not assign ...

Testing general relativity: from local to cosmological scales.

I summarize various tests of general relativity on astrophysical scales, based on the large-scale structure of the universe but also on other systems, in particular the constants of physics. I emphasize the importance of hypotheses on the geometric structures of our universe while performing such tests and discuss their complementarity as well as their possible extensions.
